Abstract: In order to select the most suitable short fibre reinforcements in keratin matrix composite membranes, this paper analyzed the break and damage characteristics of neat regenerated keratin membranes, as well as inorganic whiskers and wool fibrils reinforced keratin heterogeneous and homogeneous composite membranes, and then the effect of branched fibrils ends on achieving reinforcement and toughness simultaneously were also explored. The tensile curves were discussed by stages, and combined with the microscopic photographs, so the results suggested that the mechanical properties and shape character of reinforcements have some effect on composite membranes. However, the matrix mechanical properties were taken priority in composites, and cracks points were introduced accompanied with reinforcements, which can degrade the composites mechanical performance, but only the proper mechanical properties and shape character of reinforcements can effectively improve the composites properties.
